A tough way to start the morning -or- someone needs a hug

by jk 22. May 2008 09:56

No one really likes notes on their computer monitor.  You know you're in for a *good day* when you find a note like this one...

Kevin D sucks :)

Ahh the life of a consultant :)

Think I'll go find the author (a former Magenicon) and give him a hug; he's crying out for one!

Happy thursday!

Learning in a tech interview - even if you're the interviewer!

by jk 21. May 2008 20:55

I got the pleasure of helping my client interview a potential candidate today.  It *never* ceases to amaze how it is possible to learn something from EVERYONE you talk to, including the candidate and other co-interviewers.

Former Magenicon Mike Frey brought up this web stie to help do x-browser javascript compatibility: Jslint.com

The candidate talked about Gliffy.com as a site he had used to create diagrams, flowcharts, design artifacts...

My takeaway from this experience is to keep a 'beginner mind', even when interviewing a candidate who has 10 years less experience than you!

cheers

'Bytes out' in Philly

by jk 13. May 2008 21:25

A sad day for technology - the City of Philadelphiais shutting down its citywide WiFi due to cost.  It makes me wonder how many other municipalities' WiFi infrastructures will suffer the same fate (e.g. in MN, the cities of Minneapolis & St. Louis Park)

The full store can be found here:  http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/13/philadelphia-citywide-wifi-officially-shut-down/

Magenic Technology Summit!!

by jk 12. May 2008 15:40

The first ever Magenic Technology Summit will be held June 20th 2008 in Chicago.  This is an invitation only event for current or potential Magenic customers.

What is the Technology Summit?  It is a full day *FREE* training event around the latest and greatest Microsoft technologies.

The developer track sessions include using Visual Studio 2008 to write better code, LINQ, the updoming Model View Controller (MVC) framework for ASP.NET, and WPF/Silverlight.

The server track sessions include SharePoint/MOSS, SQL Server, Team Foundation Server (TFS), and using RFID in BizTalk 2006.

The Summit will feature two keynote presentations by Jay Schmelzer from Microsoft's Visual Studio team and Magenic's own Rocky Lhotka.

Again, this event is FREE, but only by invitation and space is limited to the first 120 attendees.  How do you get invited?  For existing customers, talk to your account executive.  If you are considering becoming a Magenic customer, contact your local office.  Summit attendees will receive all of the content and code from the sessions, plus be treated to first-class training, and have a chance to network!  What more can you ask for?  We hope to see you in Chicago!

cheers
